Conventional Braces
Conventional braces, also known as metal braces or traditional braces, are a type of orthodontic treatment that is used to straighten teeth and correct bite issues. They consist of metal brackets and wires that are bonded to the teeth, and are used to apply gentle pressure to the teeth in order to move them into their proper position.
The metal brackets are usually made of stainless steel, and are attached to each individual tooth. The brackets are connected by an archwire, which runs through them and is tightened periodically by the orthodontist to apply pressure to the teeth and move them into their proper position.
In addition to the metal brackets and wires, conventional braces also use elastic bands, also called “ligatures” or “o-rings,” to hold the archwire in place. These bands come in different colors and can be changed during each visit to the orthodontist, which can be a fun way for patients to personalize their braces.
Conventional braces are a popular treatment option for many people because they are effective at correcting a wide range of dental and bite issues, including overcrowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, and crossbite. They are also widely available and are typically covered by orthodontic insurance. However, it’s important to note that due to the metal brackets and wires, conventional braces can be less comfortable than other types of braces, and may make eating certain foods difficult.
